The Workplace Relations Commission ordered Metropolitan Films International Limited to pay stagehand Raymond Boyle €5,979.20 after finding his complaint about his written employment terms well founded. In a decision dated 15 December 2023, the WRC also found a separate wages complaint not well founded and recorded that a working-time complaint had been withdrawn.

Boyle said he had worked on the company’s film and television productions for years and was not called back after a lay-off because of his union membership. The company argued that he had been employed by separate production companies and that his complaints were out of time. The WRC found Metropolitan Films International Limited was his employer and that his complaints were within the statutory time limit.

The written-terms complaint concerned a contract that gave the wrong employer name and address and an incorrect start date. The WRC awarded compensation equivalent to four weeks’ pay. On the wages complaint, it found the parties had an implied lay-off arrangement and that wages were not payable while Boyle did no work.
