In 1996, the Labour Court said Waterford Foods' proposal to reduce forklift staffing from four to 3.5 positions all year round should be accepted, with an additional £100 paid to each worker concerned. The decision was dated 11 November 1996. The Amalgamated Transport And General Workers' Union had sought to retain a fourth full-time position. Waterford Foods said seasonal demand meant the extra driver was not needed in the off-peak period. A Rights Commissioner had earlier recommended a £75 goodwill payment to each of three forklift drivers.
Labour Court accepts Waterford Foods forklift reduction and recommends £100 per worker
