In 1991, the Labour Court amended a redundancy recommendation for a van driver/packer with 21 years’ service at Mc Gowan & Company. The Court signed its decision on 28 March 1991, setting an immediate payment of £3,000 and three further payments of £2,000 at 12-month intervals. Both the company and the Irish Distributive And Administrative Trade Union had appealed the Rights Commissioner’s recommendation of £6,500. The union said that amount was insufficient, while the company cited its financial difficulties and said its £2,400 offer was more realistic. The Court referred to the company’s financial position and the worker’s long service when it changed the recommendation.
