In 2002, the Labour Court rejected a claim for compensation for lost Sunday overtime but upheld a recommendation for a once-off €500 payment to each of four workers. It signed the decision on 12 December 2002. The Services Industrial Professional Technical Union had sought compensation after new machinery and changed working hours reduced Sunday work in winter. Town Of Monaghan Co-Op said winter production was lower, Sunday work had fallen and staff had declined opportunities to work more Sundays. The Court recognised that an agreement had created an expectation of a review. It upheld the payment as a goodwill gesture and full and final settlement; the union said there would be no further claims over seasonal winter working-hour variations.
