In 1999, the Labour Court recommended an independent evaluation of counselling nurse work at the Mid-Western Health Board to help determine how the role should be remunerated. The recommendation was dated 15 December. The Irish Nurses' Organisation had sought senior public health nurse grading for posts in Limerick and Tipperary North Riding, saying their duties matched those of a post in Clare. The Board said the two nurses had applied for and accepted jobs advertised at public health nurse grade. The Court said the counselling nurse role differed from the senior public health nurse role and did not require managerial responsibilities. It also noted the special counselling skills required for the role.
