In 1999, the Labour Court recommended that Iceland Frozen Foods and Mandate return to conciliation over a disputed pay scale, without issuing a definitive recommendation. The recommendation was signed on 28 June 1999. Mandate sought a pay scale based on service and experience, with rates in line with comparable Dublin grocery outlets. Iceland Frozen Foods said its six-point plan could be introduced without increasing overall pay costs and argued that Mandate’s proposal would add more than £200,000 over two years. The Court said the parties disagreed about what had been settled at conciliation. It recommended another attempt to reach agreement, taking account of comparable pay, other employment conditions and the company’s economic circumstances. If no agreement was reached by the end of July 1999, outstanding matters could return to the Court for a final recommendation.
