In 1998, the Labour Court recommended redundancy terms for 53 workers after Fruit Of The Loom International Limited confirmed the planned closure of its Dungloe plant. The package was 3.5 weeks’ pay per year of service plus statutory redundancy payment. Workers with less than two years’ service were to be credited with two years’ notional service. The recommendation was dated 11 December 1998. The company had offered 2.5 weeks’ pay per year of service plus statutory entitlements, while the Services Industrial Professional Technical Union sought five weeks’ pay per year. The closure, due to take effect on 27 November 1998, was expected to result in 53 job losses at the Dungloe plant.
