In 1996, the Labour Court recommended ex-gratia payments for lock-keepers in a dispute between the Department Of Arts Culture And The Gaeltacht and the Services Industrial Professional Technical Union. The recommendation was signed on 6 December 1996. The Court recommended £800 for each of five lock-keepers whose working arrangements changed, and £500 for each of the other lock-keepers involved, in full and final settlement of their claims. The union had sought compensation for the loss of a 10-day fortnight and retrospective weekend and eating-on-site payments. The Department said the restructuring deal had improved pay and conditions and opposed retrospective payments.
