The Labour Court recommended that an assistant lecturer’s promotion application receive sympathetic consideration by the University Of Limerick committee at its next sitting. The recommendation was signed on 30 September 1996. The worker had applied unsuccessfully for promotion three times. Manufacturing, Science, Finance (MSF) said the University had changed the promotion criteria and relied on a PhD requirement absent from an earlier recommendation. The University said it had followed the earlier criteria and that candidates without PhDs had been promoted. The Court found the worker had grounds for his grievance and recommended that the University and the union clarify the promotion process and criteria.
