In 1995, the Labour Court recommended that Irish Distillers Limited pay two Galway depot workers the taxed meal allowance for the period since it was discontinued. The recommendation, signed on 21 December 1995, also gave the workers a final opportunity to accept the company's lump-sum proposal; if they rejected it, the allowance should be red-circled and paid subject to tax. The Services Industrial Professional Technical Union opposed ending the allowance, while the company said the payment breached PAYE rules and offered a taxable buy-out.
