The Labour Court recommended ending Jurys Hotel’s drink allowance for 125 workers, while providing an equivalent take-home allowance that could not be consumed on the premises. The recommendation was signed on 20 November 1995. The recommendation followed a dispute with the Services Industrial Professional Technical Union. The union said the allowance reflected the staff’s work and unsocial hours; Jurys Hotel cited health and safety concerns and said some workers stored up drinks. As an alternative to the take-home allowance, the Court recommended a buyout with a £30,000 immediate payment, a further £30,000 in December 1996 and an ongoing £20,000 annual contribution to an Employee Assistance Programme from December 1998.
