In 1995, the Labour Court recommended that two works clerks accept the Office Of Public Works (OPW)'s redeployment offer, with compensation, after finding redundancy was the alternative. The recommendation was signed on 7 November 1995. The move to the Shannon/Erne Waterway would cut their pay by about £20 and £50 a week respectively. The Services Industrial Professional Technical Union sought to preserve their existing rates, while the OPW said the new rates matched those for other workers on the waterway and in government departments.
