In 1993, the Labour Court recommended that Shanakiel Hospital meet the Services Industrial Professional Technical Union to discuss implementation of the 39-hour week. The recommendation was dated 14 September. The dispute followed the withdrawal of a time-off-in-lieu arrangement and changes to breaks and starting times. The union said the unilateral changes might have caused loss of earnings. The Court cited union evidence that the original arrangements had followed a meeting with the employer and recommended discussion of future changes to employment terms as well.
