In 1991, the Labour Court recommended that Janssen Pharmaceutical Limited recognise Manufacturing Science Finance’s right to negotiate for its members. The recommendation was signed on 3 September 1991. The company had declined to meet the union, which represented seven sales representatives, saying it did not want to recognise a fifth union in a workforce of fewer than 90. The Court found no existing agreement gave any union sole negotiating rights.
