In 1991, the Labour Court recommended revised phased pay increases for Aer Lingus workers in a dispute with the Services Industrial Professional Technical Union over the Programme for Economic and Social Progress. It recommended that both sides accept the revised proposals. The recommendation was signed on 12 September 1991. The recommended increases were 2% from 1 April 1992, 3½% from 1 July 1992 and 5.25% from 1 July 1993. Earlier proposals had been rejected in a workers’ ballot. Aer Lingus cited financial difficulties, while the union argued the airline could meet the increases.
