In 1989, the Labour Court recommended that W & C McDonnell Limited's Drogheda staff implement the required changes and that the employer's offer be amended to £450 each. The recommendation was signed on 19 December 1989. The Marine Port And General Workers' Union had sought 60% of the £4,500 paid to clerical staff who transferred from Dublin to Drogheda, arguing work from Dublin was being transferred to its members. The company disputed that additional work was being absorbed and said existing capacity and reduced work offset any transfer. The Court concluded that the impact on the Drogheda staff did not warrant the amount claimed and recommended the amended offer.
