In 1989, the Labour Court recommended modifying management’s offer for on-call work by junior dental registrars at University Dental School and Hospital Cork. The recommendation was dated 18 September 1989. The Irish Medical Organisation sought pay rates based on duty hours, arguing the registrars were first on-call while medical registrars were normally third on-call. The hospital said the medical staff contract did not directly apply to dental posts and cited limited funding. The Court recommended raising the ex-gratia payment to £1,200, split into £600 at Christmas and £600 at summer.
