The Labour Court recommended that Kildare Chilling Company Limited apply the 1984 agreement on permanent staff appointments, understanding the relevant figure to be eight. It did not recommend conceding a claim for one day’s pay, but recommended an ex-gratia payment of £25 to employees affected by short-time working. The recommendation was signed on 18 January 1989. The Irish Transport and General Workers’ Union had raised the three issues on behalf of workers. The day’s pay claim concerned slaughtering hall workers not called in when cattle remained after the normal killing day; the short-time claim concerned lost social welfare benefits when workers had to break and re-sign their claims.
