The Labour Court did not recommend conceding the Irish Transport and General Workers’ Union’s claim for an additional wage increase for 25 workers at Toyota (Ireland) Limited. The recommendation was signed on 17 January 1989. The Court said cost-increasing claims were precluded under the Programme for National Recovery. It also said the merit-payment system had not been discussed with the union or generally, and suggested Toyota make its individual eligibility criteria known. The union had described the differential paid to non-union staff as victimisation and discrimination.
