In 1988, the Labour Court recommended that Meath Metal Products Limited pay a worker £250 after finding that his dismissal was not unwarranted but that he had received no warning of the employer’s dissatisfaction. The recommendation was signed on 16 December 1988. The worker, represented by the Federated Workers Union Of Ireland, sought reinstatement and compensation, arguing that he had been victimised after seeking a wage increase. The company said it could not afford the increase and that workplace relations had deteriorated.
