The Labour Court recommended restoring protective clothing or an allowance for 105 porters and attendants at Mid-Western Health Board after the Board changed their employment conditions without prior notice or consultation. The recommendation was signed on 9 December 1988.
The Irish Transport And General Workers' Union said the withdrawal breached a longstanding practice and formal agreement and caused financial loss to low-paid staff. The Board cited its financial difficulties, said it continued to supply white coats and estimated the claim would cost about £14,000 a year.
The Court acknowledged the Board's financial circumstances but said the change had not followed proper procedures. It recommended restoring the appropriate clothing issue or allowance for 1987 and 1988.
