In 1988, the Labour Court recommended a 3% pay increase for nine general operatives at Albatros Fertilizers Limited from 1 May 1987. The recommendation was signed on 14 July 1988, with the National Plan to apply for three years from 1 July 1988. The Irish Transport And General Workers' Union had sought a 10% increase, arguing that earlier rises had fallen below the norm and rationalisation had cost workers £100 a week per man. The company cited losses before its takeover, costs of remaining competitive and its view that basic pay compared favourably with industry rates.
