The Labour Court recommended that the Federated Workers' Union Of Ireland accept Kildare County Council's plan to contract out refuse collection, with any remaining issue handled through agreed procedures. The recommendation was signed on 30 May 1988. The plan affected 10 employees, whom the Council proposed to redeploy to other duties at the same basic pay. The union objected to contracting out and questioned the need to replace three trucks. The Council said continuing direct collection would cost £150,000 more a year and three replacement trucks would cost £80,000 each. The Court did not consider the alternative duties at the same basic rate unreasonable.
