In 1988, the Labour Court recommended that Waterford Cooperative Society Limited pay the Christmas bonus from 1987 if the Irish Transport and General Workers’ Union entered immediate talks on the company’s rationalisation proposal. The recommendation was signed on 31 May 1988. The dispute concerned one week’s bonus pay and disagreement over staffing levels in the yoghurt plant’s packing section. The Court said it would appoint an independent assessor to report on staffing, with the study to form the basis for resolving the disagreement. It envisaged that negotiations on the yoghurt plant would conclude within three months of the recommendation’s acceptance.
