In 1988, the Labour Court did not recommend conceding the Irish Transport And General Workers' Union's claim for extra compensation for a crossing keeper at Strandbally level crossing. The recommendation was signed on 30 August 1988. The union said the shale-train timetable had removed the worker's four-hour break and added duties, with trains increasing from nine to 16. Irish Rail said crossing keepers were paid under an existing agreement and that the worker had already received payment for hours above 12 a day. The Court found he was being paid correctly under that agreement.
