In 1988, the Labour Court recommended that Irish Industrial Gases' proposal to implement one redundancy at its Cork plant be accepted and implemented. The recommendation was signed on 1 March 1988. The Irish Transport And General Workers' Union opposed the change, warning that reduced staffing could put workers handling a dangerous substance at risk. The company said safety standards would not fall and that the affected worker had accepted another position within the company. The Court relied on a previous conciliation agreement and the company's safety undertaking.
