Labour Court rejects Irish Transport and General Workers’ Union claim on Cork tunnel allowance

By Tadhg O'Sullivan

Labour Court ·

In 1987, the Labour Court did not recommend conceding the Irish Transport and General Workers’ Union’s claim against Iarnrod Eireann over how a Cork tunnel allowance was calculated. The recommendation was signed on 16 December 1987. The union argued that the 20% allowance should apply as it had before October 1986, including paid overtime and shift hours. Iarnrod Eireann argued it should apply only to actual hours worked in the tunnel at the basic hourly rate. The Court considered its earlier recommendation and the practice for similar allowances, and did not recommend conceding the union’s claim.
