In 1987, the Labour Court recommended that Bank Of Ireland and the Irish Transport and General Workers' Union negotiate compensation for changes to a porter's overtime and start time. The recommendation was signed on 13 April 1987. The porter at the Bank's Smithfield branch worked eight hours of regular overtime a week, taking post to the G.P.O. The Bank proposed reducing this to one hour after local post office arrangements changed, and moving his start time from 8am to 8.30am. The union argued that the changes worsened his working conditions and that his start time could not be changed without agreement. The Court said the 1978 agreement required the porter's agreement to change his existing start time. It recommended negotiations on compensation for the effects of both proposed changes.
