In 1987, the Labour Court recommended that the claimants accept Yates Industries (Ireland) Limited’s final offer in the 26th wage round. The recommendation was signed on 6 March 1987. The offer was an increase of £7 a week plus 5% for 14 months, one extra day of annual leave and a canteen. The Court did not recommend conceding the Irish Transport and General Workers’ Union’s claim on overtime rates, and noted that the parties had agreed to open a canteen. The union had sought a 12% pay increase, extra leave and shift premiums in overtime calculations. Yates Industries cited high costs and the need to improve competitiveness.
