Labour Court awards £250 each to two part-time workers after redundancy discrimination finding

The Labour Court found that Michael O'Neill & Sons Limited indirectly discriminated against two female part-time workers by selecting them for redundancy, and awarded £250 to each. The determination was signed on 11 May 1988. The Court rejected the separate claims based on marital status and failure to provide further training. It found that a greater proportion of men and single women could meet the full-time work requirement, while no essential requirement justified selecting only part-time workers for redundancy. The company had said trading difficulties required staff cuts and that its proposal had been accepted in a staff ballot. The Federated Workers' Union of Ireland brought the claims on the workers' behalf, assisted by the Employment Equality Agency.
