Labour Court recommends higher bonus rate for four Stafford Shipping cranemen

The Labour Court recommended raising the bonus rate for four cranemen employed by Stafford Shipping Limited to 1.60 pence per tonne, with immediate effect, and raising the tonnage ceiling to 500,000 tonnes. The recommendation was signed on 4 December 1986. The Irish Transport and General Workers’ Union had sought a higher rate and removal of the ceiling. The company opposed a rate increase but offered to raise the ceiling. The Court said earnings comparisons with casual workers did not support the claim, while recognising the cranemen’s flexibility and co-operation under the existing agreement.
