The WRC awarded Estella Darricau €1,066 after finding that Madison House Coffee Ltd t/a Scon Galway made an unlawful wage deduction for breaks without a contract provision saying they were unpaid. The decision was dated 23 October 2025. Darricau, a café supervisor, said deductions were made for breaks from her wages, including from her final pay. The company said breaks had been paid in error and it sought to recover an overpayment under its employee handbook. The adjudicator found there was no contract clause providing for unpaid breaks.
