WRC rejects disability discrimination complaint against Meath County Council

The Workplace Relations Commission found that Meath County Council did not discriminate against Michael O'Connell by refusing his Housing Assistance Payment applications or removing him from its housing list. The complaint was not well founded, and no award was made.

In a decision dated 12 May 2025, the WRC accepted jurisdiction to hear O'Connell’s Equal Status complaint. O'Connell argued that the Council’s rent-payment requirement created a barrier for disabled applicants and that his removal from the list was discriminatory or victimisation. The Council said the applications lacked evidence of qualifying rent payments and that an inspection found him adequately housed.
