The Workplace Relations Commission awarded Maria Cassidy €1,200 gross compensation after finding that Capital Entertainment and Leisure Limited, trading as Jackpott’s Bingo, unfairly dismissed her. The decision was dated 13 January 2025.

Cassidy was dismissed after a short-change scam cost the company €650 while she was on duty at its Crumlin venue. The company said she failed to check the customer’s membership, change cash only for a member and seek help. Cassidy said the dismissal was too severe and that she tried to follow protocol.

The adjudicator accepted Cassidy should have checked the customer’s membership and sought assistance, but found the scam likely confused and destabilised her. The WRC said dismissal for a first cash-handling offence was unreasonable given her junior role and that a written warning would have been more proportionate.
