Ishal Singh was awarded €2,500 after the Workplace Relations Commission found that his employer, Back to Front Hospitality Limited, had wrongly deducted the cost of his work permit from his wages. The WRC decision is dated 17 May 2024.

Singh worked as an executive chef from 16 November 2023 until he was dismissed on 8 January 2024. He said he had not received his final three weeks’ wages and had been made liable for the permit cost, although his contract did not say he had to pay it if his employment ended.

The company accepted that deducting the permit cost was an error and said Singh was also owed three weeks’ wages and a week’s pay in lieu of notice. The adjudicator found the Payment of Wages Act complaint well founded and directed the company to pay €2,500 in net compensation, equivalent to four weeks’ net pay.
