The Workplace Relations Commission allowed Dermot O Neill’s redundancy appeal, subject to confirmation that his employment qualified for the scheme and that he had reckonable service. The decision was dated 13 December 2023. O Neill had worked as a van driver for Darrell Hodgson t/a Hodgson Transport from October 2006 until August 2023 and said he earned €500 a week. Hodgson said the business closed because of Covid and higher fuel costs, and that he could not afford the redundancy payment. The adjudicator said O Neill was entitled to two weeks’ pay for each year or part-year of reckonable service, plus one week, based on a gross weekly wage of €500. The payment depends on confirmation by the appropriate government agency that his employment was insurable for the purpose.
