The Workplace Relations Commission (WRC) awarded Lia Lawrence €2,000 after finding that her dismissal was discriminatory, and also directed her former employer to pay €1,035.40 in unpaid wages, €150 compensation for not providing written employment terms and €440.70 in minimum notice pay. The decision was dated 2 May 2024.

Lawrence worked for Justin Casey Hairdressing t/a Justin Thomas Casey Hairdressing from 12 May to 13 June 2023. She complained that wages and holiday pay were unpaid, that she had not received written employment terms, and that she was dismissed because of her disability. The company did not attend the hearing or make representations. The adjudication officer said Lawrence’s sworn evidence was uncontested and credible.

The officer found disability discrimination, noting that the employer did not appear to consider reasonable accommodation. That means considering changes that might help an employee with a disability do their job. The WRC also upheld the complaints about unpaid wages, written terms and minimum notice. A second minimum notice complaint was dismissed as a duplicate.
