The Workplace Relations Commission partly upheld Ian Metcalfe’s complaint against Lidl Ireland Gmbh over delayed wages, but rejected his two complaints under the Employment Equality Acts. The decision was dated 14 December 2023.
Metcalfe said he was due €2,227.16 on 31 March 2023. The officer found he had selected weekly pay, so €556.79 was due that day and was paid on 3 April. Its late payment was an unauthorised deduction, making the wage complaint well-founded in part. No compensation was awarded because the wages had been paid.
Metcalfe also alleged victimisation after raising a wage grievance and discrimination and harassment on race and religion grounds following a workplace incident. Both equality complaints were found not well-founded. The officer found the evidence did not establish a link to a protected ground. Lidl said a bank instruction error caused the wage delay, apologised and gave affected staff €50 vouchers; that voucher was not an adjudicated award to Metcalfe.
