The Workplace Relations Commission found that Fatima Groups United breached Elizabeth Carolan’s rights by paying her €14 an hour as a part-time worker, compared with €15 for full-time staff. It ordered the community organisation to pay her €350 compensation. Carolan returned from maternity leave in February 2023 and requested part-time hours because of childcare. The respondent said it introduced different rates because full-time workers were harder to recruit and it believed objective criteria justified the change. It conceded before the hearing that it needed to resolve the matter and did not contest the breach. The WRC said the €350 compensation was just and equitable. The decision was dated 7 November 2023.
