The Workplace Relations Commission found that Waterford & Wexford Education Training Board did not discriminate against Brendan O Byrne on age grounds after he failed to secure a fixed-term Maths teaching role. Adjudication Officer Orla Jones said the interview process was fair and showed no age bias. The decision was dated 10 August 2026, and no award was recorded.
O Byrne said the successful candidate was younger and argued that his interview score did not reflect his experience. The Board said he scored 62, below the qualifying mark of 70, and was not placed on the panel. Jones found no evidence that the interview process or panel was unfair, and said age discrimination had not been proved.
He also complained that fixed-term staff lacked an appeal process available to permanent employees and that the Board failed to provide employee representatives with information about fixed-term work. The adjudicator found the cited appeal process applied to specified posts, not teaching roles, and said the information claim was unsupported. Both fixed-term complaints were not well founded.
