The Workplace Relations Commission upheld Gerard Service’s redundancy and minimum notice complaints against Tionscala Gpe Teoranta, trading as GPE Industries. It ordered the employer to pay a further week’s pay and found Service entitled to statutory redundancy based on gross weekly pay of €936, subject to insurable employment. The decision was dated 17 October 2023. Service worked on a specified purpose contract for an Intel project that ended in October 2022. The employer said the project had concluded, one week’s notice was given and a €2,500 payment had been made as a bonus or goodwill gesture. The WRC found his COVID and parental leave absences did not break his service, which exceeded two years, and that the project’s completion created a redundancy situation. It also found he was entitled to two weeks’ notice, so a further week’s pay was due.
