WRC dismisses part-time work complaint against Connolly Hospital

The Workplace Relations Commission dismissed Breiffni Ryan’s complaint against Connolly Hospital Blanchardstown under the Protection of Employees (Part-Time Work) Act. The decision was dated 11 April 2024. The adjudicator found the complaint misconceived because Ryan’s allegations did not establish a connection to her status as a part-time worker. The merits of those broader workplace allegations were not decided. Ryan had complained of less favourable treatment compared with a full-time employee, including concerns about night-shift breaks and support, and not getting a permanent role. The adjudicator said she had not identified a suitable full-time comparator and that these matters did not relate to part-time status under the Act. Neither party attended the hearing; Ryan had asked for a decision based on her written submissions.
