The Workplace Relations Commission found that Patrick Dooley was not discriminated against on the Traveller community ground in a complaint against Lidl Ireland Gmbh. The decision was dated 18 December 2023.
Dooley said a staff member asked him and his relatives to leave Lidl’s Churchfield supermarket and used words he understood to mean Travellers were unwelcome. Lidl denied discrimination, saying staff intervened because of disruptive behaviour in the shop.
The adjudicator accepted the deputy manager’s account that she was responding to interference with store goods, and found her account credible. The decision said the store lacked clear guidance for managing and recording challenging behaviour, but concluded that Dooley had not proved discrimination. His complaint was found not well founded.
