The Workplace Relations Commission awarded Monika Nagle €2,000 after finding she was unfairly dismissed by Forbidden City Ltd., trading as Translation.ie. The decision was dated 17 February 2023.

Nagle said she had worked as an interpreter for the company for eight years and was summarily dismissed in December 2021 when it changed her status to self-employed. The company argued she had always worked under a contract for services, not as an employee.

The adjudication officer found Nagle was an employee, citing evidence including payroll records, P60s, payslips and annual leave. The officer concluded she had been unfairly dismissed. In assessing the award, the officer noted that Nagle continued working at the same rate of pay immediately after the termination and later left because she was dissatisfied with her treatment.
