WRC declares John Duggan entitled to statutory redundancy lump sum

The WRC found John Duggan’s redundancy complaint well founded and declared him entitled to a statutory lump sum, subject to qualifying insurable employment. Its decision was dated 15 March 2023. Duggan said Celtic Bay Builders Ltd told him in January 2022 that it was no longer trading and had no further work for him, and that it had not paid his redundancy entitlement. The respondent did not attend the hearing or reply to the complaint; the adjudication officer was satisfied it had been properly notified. The officer accepted Duggan’s evidence and found that his employment ended by redundancy in January 2022. His statutory entitlement is based on service from 26 March 2018 to 21 January 2022, with breaks due to COVID-19 restrictions, and a gross weekly wage of €745.82. The decision gives that weekly wage as the basis for the calculation, not the amount of the lump sum.
