The Workplace Relations Commission directed Ecovolt Limited to pay Darren Doyle €1,393 in compensation after finding the deduction of training costs from his wages was unlawful. The decision, dated 20 January 2023, also awarded him €550 for a separate breach of employment-terms rules. Doyle had agreed to repay the cost of a photovoltaic training course if he left within two years, but the company had not given him written notice of the repayment agreement before the course. He later told the company he did not consent to the training cost being deducted from his wages. The officer also found that Doyle had not received a written statement of his core employment terms within five days of starting work.
