The Workplace Relations Commission found Caroline O’Connor’s complaint against Ciara’s Homestyle was not well founded. The decision, dated 4 October 2022, concerned an allegation of disability discrimination and failure to provide reasonable accommodation after O’Connor was refused service when she declined to wear a face covering.
The shop said staff asked O’Connor for proof of her claimed exemption and denied service when she provided only a verbal assertion. The adjudicator found no satisfactory proof of a disability as defined by the Equal Status Act had been established, and concluded that the complaint failed.
