The Workplace Relations Commission awarded fisher Mohamed Shokr Ghonim €2,500 on a public-holiday complaint and €1,000 over his employment information statement. Adjudication Officer Pat Brady’s decision was dated 14 March 2024.
Ghonim worked aboard the Nausicaa for respondent Richard Branagan. He said he worked long hours and challenged work records, claiming about €61,000 in minimum-wage arrears. Branagan disputed his account and said the records reflected hours worked and rest periods.
The adjudicator found that examples undermined the credibility of the respondent’s records, but they did not prove arrears over the full period or allow a reliable calculation. The minimum-wage complaint was not well founded. The public-holiday complaint was upheld for €2,500, although the decision gives conflicting complaint references. The employment statement complaint was upheld because the statement omitted the pay rate and cited the wrong statutory instrument.
The decision identifies complaints 005 and 006 as withdrawn, but elsewhere gives a conflicting withdrawal count and also associates complaint 007 with both withdrawal and the public-holiday award. Other complaints were out of time or outside the WRC’s jurisdiction, so the merits were not decided.
