Freshly Chopped ordered to pay €10,000 to Hannah Murphy in age discrimination case

The Workplace Relations Commission has ordered Freshly Chopped Limited to pay former store manager Hannah Murphy €10,000 after finding that age discrimination was one reason for her dismissal. Adjudication Officer Patricia Owens issued the decision dated 30 April 2024.

Murphy worked for the company from 7 to 21 December 2020. She said an area manager told her she was too young for the job and could return in two years. The company denied discrimination, saying it dismissed her during probation over performance and conduct concerns.

Owens found the area manager unreliable and accepted Murphy’s account that he referred to her age. The company cited uniform, break-area and conduct issues, but there had been no review meetings and the decision to dismiss relied on one informal discussion. The Commission found her age discrimination complaint well founded and ordered €10,000 compensation.
