Thomas Nicholson pleaded guilty to theft at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court. The proceedings were reported on 29 April 2015.
He used his own passport and bank statement to hire a mini-digger worth just over €17,000, arranged delivery to a field and later stole it. The machine was never returned. Nicholson said in a Garda interview that he had taken it for someone else and did not know where it was. Garda Thomas Tighe accepted that Nicholson had a cocaine-related drug debt and that he had used his own documents, making it clear he was unlikely to get away with the theft.
Nicholson’s defence said he no longer abused drugs, was studying security and had €700 in court as a token of remorse. Judge Martin Nolan revoked bail and remanded him in custody until the following week for sentence.
